Go Back
staying attentive
Monday, May 23, 2005 - Safwan
everyday i open my news intake valve. what strikes me as sad, and somewhat embarrassing, is that, invariably, i siphon out as exhaust, that which has ceased to be novel. a prime example of this is the current socio-political reality in iraq. i've noticed that i've become somewhat numb to the daily reports of yet more lives lost from this history-rich people. so, i'll endeavour to pay more attention. i'm hoping that publicly externalizing this intention will help me carry through with it.
i recently read an interesting opinion piece in which the author claimed that a country's democratic freedoms are best measured by the relative security of its people. if we put iraq to this test, it would seem that the u.s. government's attempts at giving freedom to the people of iraq, hasn't faired so well. this is evidenced by estimates that the number of civilian deaths caused by military intervention in iraq is somewhere between 21795 and 24735 people.
